Treadmills vs. Ellipticals
Aerobic activities are very important. Improving
your heart strength will help you lead a longer, healthier life, as well as
keep your weight low, burn calories, and keep you active in ways that you
may not usually be active.
When you are ready to make this purchase, you have
two choices. You can choose to buy a:
·
Treadmill
·
Elliptical Machine
Both of these represent the two known, effective
ways for getting an effective indoor aerobic workout that will help you
improve your heart health and strengthen your muscles. However, choosing
between these two can be difficult, because both have their big supporters.
Below are some of the benefits of getting a treadmill over an elliptical
machine.
Benefits of a Treadmill
1.
Real Running
Running on a treadmill is real running. You are
using the same exact muscles, getting your bones and legs used to the
pressure, and learning to pace yourself for long distances. On the other
hand, elliptical machines only simulate running. They do not necessarily
prepare you for running outdoors. This can have multiple benefits. If you
play sports that require a great deal of running, for example, the running
you do on the treadmill will prepare your legs for the aches and pains that
you will no doubt feel. On the other hand, if you used an elliptical
machine, your legs may tire out very quickly even if your heart strength is
still running strong. When you are on a treadmill, you are really running,
and the benefits of that experience cannot be ignored.
2.
Space
Treadmills take up considerably less space in your
home than a cross trainer. The vast majority of treadmills can be folded up
and put away, and even those that cannot still take up less room than any
elliptical machine, since ellipticals need additional space to account for
stride length. Anyone looking for something more space efficient will find
that a treadmill is a considerably better choice overall.
3.
Walking, Warming Up, etc.
Ellipticals are good ways to get solid
cardiovascular workouts, but they are not quite as great a choice for going
slow. Walking is easier on a treadmill, so those that are going to use a
machine for simpler tasks will find that walking on the treadmill is a
better choice for their overall health.
Choosing Between the Two
As you can see, both options provide solid
cardiovascular benefits and do a good job at burning calories. In many
cases, you may choose to get an elliptical for your home. However,
treadmills are considerably better for athletes like marathon runners that
need to get used to running, they take up less space, and those that are
simply looking for a machine to walk in regularly may prefer a treadmill as
well. Treadmills are not for everyone, but if any of those criteria are
important to you, there is a good chance that you will benefit far more from
a treadmill than you would an elliptical.
